NBC’s Chuck Kicks Off Part II of its Fourth Season with the Return of a Familiar Face
This week, viewers got a filler episode of Chuck, in that not too much of great importance happened. Chalk that up to the creators not knowing they were even going to get these back 11 episodes, and then having to come up with story ideas for them. Since the mega-arc that was Volkoff ended with last week’s everything-but-the-kitchen-sink episode, this week the writers got to take a breather and deliver a fun, easy on the angst episode of Chuck before having to prepare the next arc that will take viewers til the end of the season.
We begin with Special Agent Roan Montgomery (guest star John Larroquette), last seen in Season 2′s “Chuck vs. the Seduction,” schmoozing it up in Marrakesh and hitting on a woman at the bar. When he tells her that he is there to uncover who has been forging fake 100 dollar bills, the woman along with two other ladies call him by his name and knock him out. When he awakes, he tells the head woman holding him captive that he’d like to be their head of distribution in the fake money-making business.
In Burbank, pretty much the entire cast of characters minus Jeff, Lester and Big Mike are playing with baby Clara. Morgan tells Casey that Kathleen, Alex’s mother, wants to meet Morgan and wants to know if this is OK with Casey. He also wants to know if he can tell Kathleen that Casey is alive, as Alex has been lying to her mother about that fact for some time. When pressured from the Bartowskis/Woodcombs about wedding details, Sarah and Chuck decide they need to go on a mission ASAP, and Casey agrees. They page Beckman — a big no-no, as she’s only supposed to call on them — who is seen drinking and appears slightly off her game (a “hot mess,” Chuck says, though not to her face); she tells them to retrieve Roan and informs them that it’s all female soldiers who have captured him. Sarah reminds Chuck of Beckman and Roan’s storied romantic history.
Sarah tells Chuck that she really wants to avoid a big California wedding, that she would like to elope with Chuck instead of the normal festivities. Chuck vents about this to Morgan, and Morgan vents right back as this is crushing his dream of being Chuck’s first man.
Once in Marrakesh, Team Chuck — minus Morgan, who stays in CA this week — break into the fortress and change into traditional Muslim garb so as not to stand out. There are belly dancers in the fortress, and Sarah says they’ll never see her dress like that, even if it was for her country. Chuck flashes on a Saudi oil tycoon, but Casey and Sarah tell him that’s not their mission. Casey takes out the women guarding Roan’s room and they enter to see Roan, tied to a bed and blindfolded, ready for sex. They remove his blindfold and his face falls when he sees Team Chuck there instead of the head of the money-making operation. Casey hides under the bed and Chuck and Sarah hide behind a sheet hanging on the wall as said woman does enter. Chuck quietly bickers with Sarah about the eloping business and then sneezes, which causes the sheet to drop and the mission to flop.
Back in Burbank, Alex reveals to Morgan that she doesn’t want Casey to know that her mother is alive as, for the first time in her life, her mother is finally happy.
Roan, Chuck and Sarah are tied up in the dungeon, but not Casey because he hid under the bed. As they continue to bicker, the truth comes out about Chuck really not wanting to just elope but to have a big wedding with family and friends invited. Casey comes to break them out of the dungeon but first has to do away with the guard, a big, mannish-looking woman. Casey tells them Chuck and Sarah via headset that he will seduce her as she is his type of woman. Chuck and Sarah hear everything. Casey eventually just tranqs the woman and blows the dungeon door open. Roan wants to stay and complete his mission, but Casey tranqs him, too, saying Beckman said Roan would say that; Casey then sends Sarah, Chuck and Roan home, deciding to stay himself and finish the mission.
A furious Beckman removes Roan’s Special Agent title and — haha! — makes him a Buy More employee as punishment. He has to wear the green shirt and everything. He complains to Chuck, “I’ve never felt polyester against my skin before. I feel a chafing. A chafing of stylishness.” Roan tells Chuck of his and Beckman’s past, in a flashback that will rank among the all-time greats: It’s Berlin, 1989, and the Wall has just come down. A dark haired Roan and a long-haired, dirty blonde(!) Beckman kiss in the streets (while Beckman holds her gun), and say adieu. They vow that if, in 20 years they still haven’t found love, they will become a proper couple. This is why Beckman is so furious with him now. Chuck can’t believe Beckman once had dirty blonde hair. “It was the 80′s. Everything was a dirty blonde,” Roan replies.
Roan gives Chuck tips on how to get Sarah to do what he wants in regards to the wedding. Namely, give her an evening of ‘erotic pleasure.’ Returning home in a spiffy suit and some cologne, Chuck sees that Sarah’s got the same idea: she appears in a belly dancer suit and does a wonderful, fan-servicing number for him. However, Chuck is too smart to fall for it, but just barely.
At the fortress, Casey hides in between the walls and overhears a meeting on the other side between the head woman and the oil tycoon. He wants money from her along with a mint that is hidden somewhere, but instead of giving it to him, her female soldiers take him and all of his men out, leaving bullet holes all along Casey’s wall. In addition, part of the wall caves in, a bearing comes down, and Casey’s arm gets pinned. He tells the team back at Castle that he’s going to have to cut his arm off to free himself, 127 Hours-style. Beckman tells him to stop being ridiculous, and promises they’ll get him out of there. Beckman says their new mission is to retrieve Casey and find the location of that mint. Regretfully she sends Roan with them, as he’s the only man who is capable of seducing the head soldier into revealing its location. “He’s gonna do a Seduction Impossible,” Chuck utters. And we have our title!
Sarah reveals to Chuck that the reason she wanted to elope is because she barely has any friends or family to be at a wedding for her. Chuck says that he will make it happen, no matter what. She will have family at the wedding.
Roan manages to get the location of the mint from the female soldier, and then Beckman, via headset tells Roan to duck. We then see Beckman, in Marrakesh with Team Chuck, holding a bazooka and firing it from about a half mile away, blowing the room that he’s in to smithereens. (Whaaat! Yeah, Beckman!) Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned.
In the epilogue, Roan and Beckman share a romantic candlelit dinner — Beckman even has her hair down! — and they decide that it’s not logical for them to ditch the spy stuff to become a couple, but they don’t rule out an annual get-together for some hanky-panky, either. (Again, you go Beckman!) And Chuck tells Sarah that he wants to get to know her family better.c
